Do Grand Canyon camp sites have running water? Yes, both of the campgrounds have running water, flush toilets, and showers; Mather Campground (South Rim) and North Rim Campground 

Can you have a fire in Grand Canyon? Yes, wood and charcoal fires are permitted in camp site provided fire rings. NO FIRES ARE PERMITTED anywhere else in the park.

How much does it cost to backpack in Grand Canyon? $10 for the permit and $8 per person / per night for Backcountry Camping. You can obtain a permit  by visiting one of the Grand Canyon visitor center.  

What’s the deal with Grand Canyon camping reservations? All of the campgrounds take reservations and it is recommended you get them as much as 6 months in advance if you hope to get one. You can get reservations for Grand Canyon camping by calling Recreation.gov at 877-444-6777 or using their website. 

Is Grand Canyon safe at night? Yes! Grand Canyon is safe to camp overnight or even explore in the dark (just be sure you know where the canyon edge is). The park is patrolled by GC Rangers 24/7 who are available if you get into trouble. Be sure to always carry appropriate clothes whether you are in the car, at camp, or on the trail.

I would suggest you drive to the closest visitor center and start from there. 

Keep in mind that 90% of the 5 million annual visitors go to the South Rim but if you have an extra 5 hours to drive around to the North Rim you won't be disappointed.
