All About Salomon Hiking Shoes
Running Emerges
Starting in 1947 in France with skis and bindings this company found its way to the trail in 2001 with its release of the Raid Race trail shoe. There was a beautiful combination of comfort, fit, and excellent construction. This was a future leaning design brought sturdy features of the hiking boot to the trail shoe.
For the last 19 years they have continued to make a name for themselves among hikers. Pro athletes and weekend warriors continue to become brand loyalists and dedicated users of these well-engineered products.
Needless to say, the company continues to add to its robust selection of off-road footwear.
Fast and Firm
These shoes are known for letting you 'feel the trail'. Most of the choices are going to give you a fast and firm feel, not a soft and cushy feel. This gives the user a super responsive feel with a connection to the trail.
The technologies designated for that feel were introduced in 2017. The Sonic and Sense Ride offer two of the technologies utilized for this feel. The mid-sole is constructed of two materials, Opal and EnergyCell+. The top layer is the lightweight, thermoplastic polypropylene cushion called Opal with the EnergyCell+ sitting below that made EVA and is designed to absorb shock and bounce back.

Lacing
Salomon shoes has always been one step ahead of the competition when it comes to securing the foot (they are known for their cutting edge ski and snowboard bindings) and their trail-worthy shoe series is no exception. The Quicklace lacing system utilizes and easy to grab cinch. The extra lace can be tucked into a pocket - no knots or bows to tie! This system allows you to freely scamper without laces getting stuck on rocks and you can really dial in the tightness and fit of the shoe.
Grip
Wearing Salomon shoes are like being a mountain goat or gecko, they can be so grippy! A special formulation from the maker themselves, Contragrip outsole is excellent for traction. It comes in a few versions, but the high abrasion concept offers excellent durability, flexibility, and great grip even in wet conditions. The various compounds are mixed and matched to create the variety of sole options available.
This featured element is present in many of the trail options. The external layer is ready to take a beating from the exposure to surfaces and general wear and tear. The middle sections are low-density and designed to offer that superior grip on various terrain conditions. The contact points on the rear and front are firmer and intended to thwart abrasion while adding traction over the edges.

Compressed Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA)
Many brands take advantage of the Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) technology. This is the shock absorber in so many of the options. It is flexible and is resistant to sagging. The natural bending tendency accommodates the foot through the natural strike pattern. Compressed EVA is special in that in when it was created a black of the material is put into a mold, then heat is added until it can be formed into the final shape.
Ortholite Sockliner
The sock-liner is intended to add more cushion to the underfoot. The piece of foam used is full-length and is directly on top of the cushioning section. The Ortholite version includes an anti-microbial and anti-moisture coatings, giving you a fighting chance at odor-free shoes!
Sensifit
This technology is made of components on the outer part of the upper unit that collaborate to provide the ultimate in fit. These elements include thin alternating layers where the mesh integrates itself with the other layers. The series of eyelets that the shoelaces pass through add the final element to the superior fit.

Endofit
This is the company's own in-shoe sleeve technology. This super soft fabric is stretchy and allows the foot to move naturally. It allows the hiker to feel like their in socks, without even having to put any on. This material is ideal for allowing breath-ability in footwear.

Choosing the Best Hiking Shoe
Since this is the most important piece of gear it is super important to make the right choice. Consider what you plan to do. Are you headed to the desert or the snow? Will you carry a lot of weight or are you trail running? How far do yo plan to go? Will the terrain be sandy, hard packed, rocky, or wet?
Answering the above questions can help you when choosing hiking shoes if you should have a low or high cut shoe or if you need to consider breathabiltiy or waterproofing, or if you need to get the biggest lugs to carry over slippery scree.
If you plan on going long distances look for cushioning and built in protection, for middle distances 'all-around' options are best and for short jaunts look for lightweight shoes.
Check out a little guide for getting a good fit on your next hiking shoes.
