What Does Adidas Mean?

The founding father of Adidas is Adolph Dassler and the company is named for him, Adi- (short for Adolph) and -das for his last name, Dassler. The name of the company is its own meaning.  The meaning of adidas is the owners name.

And, yes, we have heard of the whole All Day I Dream About Soccer (or sports or other words that start with an 'S') idea about the meaning of the name. As you can see from above that is just a fun urban myth.

How To Pronounce Adidas

Adidas is pronounced AH-dee-DAHS; and the name has been stylized as adidas (with all lower case) since 1949

Where are Adidas Shoes Made?

The company works with more than 1200 independent factories that are scattered over 65 countries.

Adidas uses raw materials including recycled polyester, polyacetic acid, Tencel, organic cotton and non-mulesed wool in the production of shoes.

Most of the raw materials are sent for manufacturing in countries like Pakistan, India, Vietnam and Indonesia, as well as others in Asia.

Suppliers are also located in Asia in places like Thailand, Indonesia, China, and Taiwan.

The materials are extracted in and around Asia and this means the cost for sourcing, shipping and creating are lower when the work is done close to the supply.

How to Lace adidas Superstars and Other Street Shoes?

Wondering how to lace your street shoes from adidas? The most common is the straight lace. This style looks best (IMHO) with fat laces.

Straight Lacing:
Step #1
Start with an equal amount of lace on each side of the bottom eyelet.
Step #2
Left lace goes straight up the inside of the shoe to the second eyelet, then straight across.
Step #3
Right lace goes straight up the inside of the shoe to the third eyelet, then straight across.
Step #4
Repeat Steps 2 and 3, alternating between the right and left laces skipping their respective eyelets inside the shoe before running straight across to the next eyelet. Continue this pattern until complete and finish with a regular knot.

Where is Adidas From?

The original company was founded by two brothers in their mothers’ house in Herzogenaurach, Germany. Adolf led the charge.

Adolf “Adi” began by making sports shoes in his mother’s kitchen or basement after he returned home from WWI. His brother soon joined him.

Adolf and Rudolph began their shoemaking together in 1924. They began under the name Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory and started by developing running shoes for athletic events. Sometimes the power would go out and they would use pedal power from their stationary bike to run the equipment. Talk about hustle!

Early Developments

Innovation in track spikes set the Dassler company apart from others. Using canvas and rubber they made spikes that they convinced Jesse Owens to wear at the 1936 Olympics.

When Owens won four gold medals and the Dassler name was forever known as quality performance footwear by trainers and athletes.

Nazi Germany and World War II

The Dassler brothers were finding great success with their business, selling 200,000 pairs of shoes every year before WWII.

Both brothers joined the National Socialist German Workers Party, also known as the Nazi party. Adolf took the rank of Sportwart in the Hitler Youth from 1935 until the end of the war.

During WWII the it was the last sports shoe factory in operation and primarily supplied shoes to the unified armed forces of the Nazi regime. In 1943 the shoe production was replaced with anti-tank weapons manufacturing.

The Dassler factory was almost completely destroyed by US forces. The only reason that it was spared is thanks to Adi’s wife convinced the GI’s that they were only interested in making sports shoes.

Ironically, the American occupying forces ended up being a major buying force of the Gassler brothers’ shoes.

Family Drama

Then, in 1947, a drama began that would last decades. Rudolph left the family business, or maybe Adolf did, and began the shoe company Puma and Adolf started Adidas.

There are multiple versions of many stories as to why the brothers broke up. The most dramatic include speculation that one fathered the others’ child or another unforgivable infidelity.

The split was so intense that the town became known as the ‘town with bent necks’ because everypone is
Regardless of the reason for the split, it is remarkable that both went on to create successful global footwear companies. Just like many men today, it started at their mom’s house, so sweet.

The Dassler bothers original shoe had two stripes. These stripes served the purpose of helping the shoe keep its shape.

Adolf wasn’t able to keep the two strip branding since it was part of the joint venture with his brother. During ht e1952 Olympics a company called Karhu had a three stripe feature on its shoes. Adi liked the branding so much that he bought the three stripes logo in 1952.

The logo was purchased for two bottles of whiskey and about 1,600 euros.

How to Clean Adidas Sneakers

No matter if you have white sneakers, canvas shoes, suede shoes, leather sneakers, or adidas ultra boost shoes material, below includes everything you need to know.

We tell you how to clean by hand and when you can use a washing machine.

General Cleaning Instructions

When you’re learning how to clean sneakers, follow these steps:

  1. Remove excess dirt by knocking the soles together and use a soft brush, like a toothbrush, to scrub off any remaining dirt.
  2. Use a washcloth to gently wipe away stains with a mild, eco-friendly laundry detergent mixed with lukewarm water (mild detergent typically doesn’t cause yellow discoloration from toxins).
  3. Dip the washcloth in warm water and remove excess soap and suds. If necessary, use a soft bristle toothbrush dipped in water to clean white outsoles or Boost material on the edge of your shoe’s sole.
  4. Dry at room temperature and, if you’ve got leather sneakers like Superstars, apply a small amount of leather shoe conditioner or treatment.
  5. Remove laces and insoles (if possible). Place them in a pillowcase and run it through a washing machine set to cold / delicate with laundry detergent. As a bonus, washing insoles can help eliminate bad odors.

How to Clean Canvas Shoes

If you’re sporting suede shoes like many adidas Originals, then you’re strutting around in one of the most stylish shoe materials. But unfortunately, it’s extremely difficult to keep clean because suede is the bottom-side of leather. It’s an absorbent material, grabbing anything and everything that drops, spills or comes its way. Eventually, you’ll have to clean them and here’s how.

But first, a warning: Do NOT use water to clean suede. Water leaves marks, altering its appearance and staining suede.

  1. Grab your old toothbrush and get to work. Gently buff out surface stains and dispose of the dirt.
  2. Start applying pressure with your brush to work out the deeper stains.
  3. If necessary, purchase a white eraser or suede polish kit from the store. A soft nail file might also do the trick.
  4. If truly necessary, try scrubbing trouble spots with a white washcloth dipped in white vinegar or rubbing alcohol to remove super stubborn stains.

How to Clean Canvas Shoes

There’s a good chance your favorite pair of shoes are canvas. They’re one of the most comfortable shoe materials which makes them an easy go-to pair. But the result from wearing them day in and day out is that stains, dirt and grime build up fast.

If you want your canvas kicks looking as fresh as the day you bought them and you want your favorite pair of shoes last, then it helps to know how to clean them.

  1. Take an old toothbrush and start scrubbing to get rid of all that extra dirt and mud.
  2. Fill a bucket or bowl with warm water and liquid detergent or dish soap. Next, dip the tooth brush and continue scrubbing areas that need attention.
  3. Once they’ve been thoroughly cleaned, rinse your shoes in warm, clean water. Soak up excess water with an old towel
  4. Help them keep their shape by stuffing your canvas kicks with paper towels or dry washcloths. Then let them air dry indoors in a warm spot. Note: Direct sunlight or direct heat will warp your shoes or discolor them.
  5. Sound like too much work? Check out the step-by-step process below about using your washing machine on canvas shoes.
