How much is Nike Worth?

In the 1990’s there was a lot of attention given to the factory conditions at Nike factories. Particularly in Cambodia and Pakistan, where they were making soccer balls with child labor.

Nike moved its production to other locations and at least reduced the practice, they continue to use facilities that are in areas that have inadequate regulation to allow proper monitoring.

Since the late 1990’s Nike has been moving manufacturing away from China and to places like Vietnam. Part responding to public outcry and part smart business moves.

Recently, Nike has developed new and sustainable materials that require fewer gallons of water and less energy.

Many of the shoes are made of flyleather, a material that is 40% more lightweight and five times more durable than the more commonly used grain leather. Flyleather also has a lower carbon footprint and requires less water than alternatives.

Nike has gone as far as creating their own line of premium recycled materials that they use for the production of clothes, accessories and even shoes!

During the manufacture of the Nike Free RN Flyknit shoes 60% less waste is produced than traditional athletic shoe practices.

In 2017 96% of the manufacturing waste from footwear was converted to energy or recycled.

In contrast to its dark days of the 1990’s, today Nike is recognized for its efforts to ensure decent working conditions and embrace sustainability.

According to a recent report, there are 72 factories in china where Nike shoes are made (roughly 15% of their factories). A majority of the remaining factories are in Vietnam, with fewer in Indonesia. Nike reports that most factories are located in Indonesia, China, Taiwan, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, Philippines, and Malaysia.

Nike wants to be transparent about its manufacturing and you can see Nike’s manufacturing map.

Nike began the Reuse-A-Shoe program in 1993 that take old shoes and uses them for tracks and other athletic equipment.

Wondering What Company Was Founded In 1964 As Blue Ribbon Sports?

Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman started Nike in 1964 (called Blue Ribbon Sports at the time).

Phil Kinght was a track runner (middle distance) and Bill Bowerman was his coach in college. Bill was searching for ways to enhance his runners performance and tinkered with shoes in his free time.

Brand Origin of Nike

The track runner and businessman wiht his former college track coach joined forces to create what we would eventually know as Nike, in 1964.

At Portland State University Bill Bowerman coached track and was busy with improving his athletes’ performance through tinkering with the shoes they used.

He often tried various changes and add-ons with his athletes, one of them being Phil Knight. Nike claims that Phil Knight wore the first pair of Bills altered shoes. But, Otis Davis claims that he used the shoe to win gold in the 400-meter dash in the 1960 Olympics.

Phil Knight studied at Harvard and earned a Masters in Business Administration. While he was attending, he wrote a paper suggesting that taking manufacturing to Japan would give US shoemakers a chance at competing with the established German and European brands.

Since no one was interested in his idea, Phil decided to import shoes from Japan and sell them locally. The deal he struck with the Japanese business was to import the country’s popular Tiger shoe into the US.

Meanwhile, Bill Bowerman was busy working on altering the shoes his athletes wore.

It is rumored that he used his wife's waffle maker without lubricant and ruined the first one with rubber soles that glued it shut.

After that, he improved his prep method and was able to start producing waffle design outsoles.

When he tried to sell them to his former coach, Bill, they instead became equal partners in the business of athletic shoes.

Within a year of their beginning, they had sold $20,000 in their imported from Japan shoes.

It was clear they needed to make their own line of shoes. After a few years of struggle they released their first original shoe.

Not surprising that this first training shoe looked a lot like a track shoe. It had a unique waffle style outsole.

Bill used his wife’s Belgian waffle maker to create the outsole pattern, expected to give gripand be lightweight.

The first shoe was debuted at the 1972 US Track and Field Trials.

When they chose a track star to be their ambassador, they chose more than right, they chose a winner.

Steve Prefontaine was the first ambassador and he set seven American records from the 2,000 meter to the 10,000 meter during his college career (1969-1972).

Soon after, in 1979, the Nike Air technology was released. At this point the company was being taken seriously as a competitor by the then-leaders.

They found enough success to go for their Initial Public Offering (IPO). The brand continued to grow in popularity among fitness fans.
